THE FIVE STATES OF COLORADO FILM SCREENING

(WALSENBURG) August 8, 2023—The Five States of Colorado documentary film will be showcased at the Fox Theatre Walsenburg (715 Main St, Walsenburg, CO 81089) at 6 p.m., August 18, 2023.

In 1989, Colorado filmmaker Jim Havey created Havey Productions’ first historical documentary called The Five States of Colorado, a Colorado Humanities film. Now, more than 33 years later, a modern version of The Five States of Colorado will be the filmmaker’s final historical documentary.

The film is designed to illustrate the historic development of a population as diverse as the land itself. The Five States of Colorado film will broaden public perspectives on the five diverse regions within the man-made boundaries of Colorado and illustrate the influence these regions have in shaping the past, present and future of the state. The film is intended to stimulate thought and conversations on a wide variety of regional issues while commemorating the heritage, culture and people of Colorado.

The boundaries of Colorado were carved from four different territories by the U.S. Congress in 1861. These straight lines represent no river, no mountain range, no tribe or language group — yet within the state are many divides, both geographic and human. The “five states” model reveals distinct regions in Colorado, each with its own history, geography, and economy. Each region engenders a certain loyalty from its citizens and has some common ideas about how things should be done.
